...sometimes I will make an outlandish statement that prompts incredulous laughter from whoever may be listening. Since laughter is contagious I too begin to laugh. Then I say with a chuckle "You think I'm joking, but I'm not joking." Naturally, they think I'm joking, and so the laughter becomes even more raucous. "You're so funny!" they will exclaim. Then I reiterate, "No, really...I'm not joking." At this point the laughter is usually quelled and the most interesting look appears on their face. First they look offended, presumably because I stole their happiness [understandable]. Then you can see them calculating the gravity of my initial statement. They look...apologetic, but no apology comes out. Yes, you SHOULD feel bad for laughing...because I wasn't joking.
