I text a friend to find out if he's home. He replies that he is with a mutual friend at an art gallery opening and is currently drinking a glass of Preseco [sic]. I reply with the proper spelling (Prosecco) and as to not be offensive or pedantic I wrote "Just in case someone asks you to write it down. ;-)"
He replies that our [white] mutual friend is impressed.
I find this fascinating. Their enchantment with my ability to speak, spell and write have been a bottomless reservoir of inspiration for innumerable awkwardly humourous moments in my life. These occurrences are always good natured, of course. I'm also happy to be able to help break down stereotypes. But it's kind of like being a celebrity and always being hounded for an autograph or a photo. Anyway, I will be sure to dedicate an entire chapter to this subject in my memoirs. Yeah, I'm looking forward to reading it as well.
